Procedure followed in interviews

In 1994 the Association started up a programme of oral history on Georges Pompidou and the changes in France during the sixties and the beginning of the seventies. It provides personal reminiscences of all the close associates, protagonists and witnesses both French and foreign who were Georges Pompidou's contemporaries (1911-1974), and who played a decisive role during this period.

Through these interviews information is gathered on the youth and development of Georges Pompidou, his social circles and different networks – most of which were formed before 1962 – his convictions and actions as a statesman. They also provide an opportunity to study the decision-making process, the functioning of institutions and French political life. In addition, they deal with the different aspects of economic policy and the evolution of society as well as international and defence questions. A final objective is to come to an understanding of the way in which contempories of Georges Pompidou and his actions saw things.

This programme of oral archives is being carried out by teacher-researchers made available to the Association by the Education nationale in collaboration with the audiovisual department of the Section of the XX century of the Archives nationales. These personal accounts are subject to different rules, chosen by the interviewee himself, concerning their consultation : immediate consultation, written permission from the interviewee or after a period of time. In 2001, 133 interviews of an average length of four hours were deposited and made available for consultation at the Archives nationales.
