About the imaginary museum… The idea behind this imaginary museum is to assemble the works of some of the artists that Georges Pompidou especially liked. The works chosen all belong to the contemporary period. This choice is intended to show Georges Pompidou's attraction to innovative forms in artistic expression. It is clear, however, that his tastes also included an appreciation of more “classical” artists from much earlier periods. The choice of both artists and works was made on the basis of indications given, first and foremost by Madame Claude Pompidou, but also by close associates, and notably by Madeleine Négrel, Georges Pompidou's personal secretary. This imaginary museum is not Georges Pompidou's private collection but rather an imaginary inventory of his artistic universe. Sometimes it concerns works bought by Georges Pompidou himself but it equally includes works belonging to the state or the works of artists that he quite simply appreciated. The choice proposed at present could evolve over the months so as to widen the selection to include other artists that Georges Pompidou appreciated. have Musical extracts could also soon be added to the collection of the imaginary museum. This would complete the essentially pictorial approach which exists at the present time. The file-cards were compiled notably from the remembrances of Madame Claude Pompidou, Mademoiselle Madeleine Négrel, Madame Denise Esnous. At times the artists themselves supplied useful information. Finally, various works were also consulted , in particular , Hommage au président Georges Pompidou, un homme de culture , Paris, Arcurial, 1987, Georges Pompidou et la modernité , Paris, Galerie nationale du jeu de Paume, Centre Georges Pompidou, 1999 et Groshens (Jean-Claude), Sirinelli (Jean-François), Culture et action chez Georges Pompidou , Paris, PUF, 2000 (notamment les interventions de Charles-Louis Foulon, de Mireille Gauzère …). |
